Die Figur des „Außerirdischen“ diente der Science Fiction schon immer als Projektionsfolie zur narrativen Verhandlung verschiedener, mehr oder weniger angemessener Formen der Auseinandersetzung und des Umgangs von Vertretern der eigenen Kultur mit Fremdheit und der kulturellen Andersartigkeit anderer Völker. Das Buch "Alien Sounds" geht der Frage nach, auf welchem Wege die Elektrifizierung der Stimme und die damit verbundenen technischen Verfremdungsmöglichkeiten des Stimmklangs im Science Fiction Film historisch dazu beigetragen haben, der Figur des „Alien“ als zentraler Projektionsfläche kultureller Andersartigkeit sinnliche Präsenz und Ausdruck zu verleihen. Neben der Analyse der verschiedenen dafür eingesetzten elektroakustischen Gestaltungsmittel soll somit auch die Frage untersucht werden, inwiefern sich im Sound Design außerirdischer Stimmen auch epochal unterschiedliche Sichtweisen auf das „Fremde“ widerspiegeln.
